A Bequest in a Will or Trust — Sample Bequest Language

Please provide the following sample language to your client's estate planning attorney to include a bequest to Harper College Educational Foundation:

  1. Unrestricted bequest (For our unrestricted use)

Your client may designate her bequest be applied to our unrestricted purposes (an "unrestricted bequest"). The funds will give Harper College Educational Foundation flexibility to meet its greatest needs at the time your client's bequest is realized.

"I give to William Rainey Harper College Educational Foundation, with Tax Identification Number 23-7348228, a charitable organization located in Palatine, IL, the sum of $____________ [or property described herein] [or ____ percent (____%) of the rest of my estate] to be held and applied for the use of William Rainey Harper College Educational Foundation for its general purposes."
  2. Restricted bequest (For a purpose your client designates)

Your client may instead prefer to designate her bequest for a specific purpose (a "restricted bequest") at Harper College Educational Foundation.

"I give to William Rainey Harper College Educational Foundation, with Tax Identification Number 23-7348228, a charitable organization located in Palatine, IL, the sum of $____________ [or property described herein] [or ____ percent (____%) of the rest of my estate] to be applied for the following purpose: _________________."

If your client wants to restrict her bequest to a particular program or area at Harper College Educational Foundation or to establish a scholarship or other endowed fund, we recommend that she consult with us so that we can review her intended purpose and confirm that we are able to carry out her wishes.
